A group representing Canada's telco giants is lobbying the province on consumer protections laws.
The Canadian Telecommunications Association was registered this past week in-house by Robert Ghiz, the group's president and CEO. The focus of the lobbying effort was related to regulations related to the Consumer Protection Act, with the goal to reduce or eliminate potential duplication, conflict and confusion between the CPA and federal regulations, the government should exempt federally regulated telecommunications and television service providers from the application of Part III of the CPA, just as it is proposing to do for federally regulated banks and other federally regulated financial entities. They also wanted to discuss contracts for the provision of telecommunications and television services that are subject to federal oversight. For example, the CRTC has established a set of consumer codes, the Wireless Code, the Internet Code, and the Television Service Provider Code which govern contracts between service providers and consumers of such services.
