Ontario Premier Doug Ford is promising reforms to the tribunal responsible for adjudicating disputes between landlords and tenants, pointing to issues around evictions for non-payment.
But if there's one thing that can unite both sides in the rental market it's that change is needed at the Landlord and Tenant Board, which is struggling with an immense backlog of cases, according to those familiar with the tribunal.
For tenants, the slow pace of hearings means extended periods without resolution to repair requests or disputes over illegal rent increases. Meanwhile, landlords are reporting mounting losses as they wait for eviction orders in cases where tenants have stopped paying rent altogether.
