Province says new funding will allow Gardiner Expressway construction to finish a year earlier

Some of the money will also be used to help relieve traffic in other parts of the city. This includes changing the Jameson on-ramp, adding a left-turn lane on Spadina Avenue from Lake Shore Boulevard East, and "easing" noise limits and lane closures at night.

Thanks to extra money from the provincial government, work on the Gardiner Expressway could be done at least one year faster than planned, according to Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria.

Previously, the work was set to be done by April 2027, but the new boost of $73 million in funding will shorten this time to April 2026.

The announcement was made at a press conference this Wednesday at city hall, by Sarkaria and Mayor of Toronto Olivia Chow.
