Opposition parties slam Ford for rising unemployment

Ontario Liberal finance critic Stephanie Bowman said the poor job growth shows the Ford government's polices are "not working," and called on the premier to do more to help young people, with Ontario's youth unemployment rate now the second-highest in the country.

The Ontario NDP says Premier Doug Ford needs to do more to stem rising unemployment — especially amongst young people — as new statistics show the province's economy is not keeping pace with population growth.

NDP MPP Jessica Bell, the party's finance critic, said new Statistics Canada figures released Friday showing the province's unemployment rate creeping closer to 8 per cent should be a wake-up call for the Ford government.

“I’m most worried about unemployment being extra high, especially for young men, and that’s a problem,” Bell said. “When young people fall behind early in their careers, it can take years to catch up.”
