Ontario unveils new energy bill focused on job creation and 'buy Canadian'

The legislation is designed to lay the foundation for Ontario’s first-ever Integrated Energy Plan, expected later this month, which will end the siloed approach to energy policy by coordinating electricity, natural gas, hydrogen, and other fuels under one long-term strategy.

With less than a week left for the house to raise for its summer break, the Ontario PCs are proposing a new energy bill: the Protect Ontario by Securing Affordable Energy for Generations Act.

Minister of Energy and Mines Stephen Lecce says the bill seeks to transform how Ontario plans, regulates, and expands its energy system in face of rapidly rising demand driven by population growth, electrification, and the explosive rise of data centres.

“While we face an economic war with President Trump, our government is enabling utilities to ‘Buy Canadian’, in addition to making economic growth and job creation a centre of our energy plan,” Lecce said.
