Ontario’s minister of long-term care says that Ontario’s investment of $180,665,000 into three programs will help bring 4,000 new nurses to the provincial long-term care system and retain 4,000 current nurses.
$110 million of that money is earmarked for long-term care homes to establish nursing mentorship programs, which will pair close to 4,000 nursing mentors with mentees.
$70 million will go to the Jumpstart Opportunities in Nursing in Long Term Care program, which provides financial incentives, starting at $25,000, to nurses who commit to working in long-term care for at least two years. The remaining $665,00 will go to creating a one-year pilot program for 40 nursing students to gain experience working in long-term care homes.
