Ontario is scrapping tuition fees and post-secondary education requirements for prospective police officers as it looks to combat a “growing wave of crime” in communities of all sizes.
Premier Doug Ford made the announcement Tuesday in Toronto, saying the province needs to train and attract more police officers to fight rising crime — including on public transit in Toronto — and help Ontario residents feel safe.
“While we have the best and most dedicated police officers anywhere in the world… we need reinforcements — we need more police officers on our streets,” he said, pointing out that major crime in Toronto is up 20 per cent compared to last year.
