After years of mounting pressure, the Ontario government is giving municipalities the power to remove misbehaving councillors.

The Ford PCs reintroduced legislation on Monday that would give municipalities the power to remove councillors found guilty of serious misconduct — a long-awaited shift in how local officials are held accountable.

The Municipal Accountability Act, re-tabled last Thursday by Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Rob Flack, proposes a standardized code of conduct for all Ontario municipalities, enhanced training requirements, and a new multi-step disciplinary process that could ultimately lead to the removal and disqualification of elected officials for a four-year period.
