Ontario is calling for more control over immigration, citing workforce shortages and a growing backlog in asylum claims, but some question whether downloading such responsibilities to the province would do much to solve the problem.
Premier Doug Ford said Ontario wants to replicate Quebec’s immigration model, allowing the province to select a broader share of immigrants based on its economic needs.
After the latest federal immigration cap, Ontario currently is set to nominate around 10,750 nominations for 2025, down from 21,500 in 2024.
