Ontario says it’s moving to make it harder for landlords to use renovations as a way to evict tenants.

The province says its proposed changes to the Residential Tenancies Act would help curb “renovictions” by requiring landlords to get a written report on the need to vacate the unit for renovations and update tenants on the status of the repairs.

“We’re now proposing to further strengthen protections for renters who are being evicted due to renovations, demolitions or conversions,” Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark said Tuesday at a press conference in London, where the government introduced a raft of proposed changes to Ontario's residential rental legislation.
