The Ontario government announced the “largest competitive energy procurement in the province's history,” aiming to secure over 4,800 megawatts (MW) of electricity to meet increasing demand.
This would include 3,500 MW from new and expanded natural gas plants, 1,000 MW of battery storage, and 1,000 MW of hydrogen, hydro, wind and solar.
Stephen Lecce, the minister of energy and electricity, said on Tuesday that prime agricultural lands will be protected and that local councils will have to accept projects that happen within their borders.
