Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie is the new leader of the Ontario Liberal party after a tight leadership race that required three rounds to determine a winner.

Crombie led after the first two rounds of voting, but fell just short of the majority needed to win the leadership on both occasions. After Kingston MPP Ted Hsu and Ottawa MP and former provincial attorney general Yasir Naqvi were eliminated in the first two rounds, Crombie squared off with Toronto MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith in a decisive third ballot that saw the Mississauga mayor secure 53.4 per cent of the vote.

“This is a moment for all of us,” Crombie said in her victory speech. “Thank you for believing in what we are going to build together.”
