Ontario is calling for more autonomy regarding its immigration policies

“Quebec gets significant autonomy for the immigrants coming into Quebec. Plus they've received significant support for the number of asylum humanitarian claims that they've had to deal with,” Minister Piccini said.

“We've had that same reality, in fact, far more significant here in Ontario, yet we've had no support. So I’m confident that they will recognize that,” he added.

Labour and Immigration Minister David Piccini said he is asking the federal government to give Ontario more autonomy over immigration policies, similar to what Quebec currently has.

He pointed at Ontario’s growing share of asylum claimants and limited federal support to handle them as one of the reasons.

Answering a question by QP Briefing this Monday, Piccini said he has already begun conversations with the new federal administration about this topic and Ontario’s unique needs, and is calling for a more equitable partnership.
