The proposed upgrade to the Orangeville-Barrie corridor will improve reliability in Central Ontario and ensure the system can continue to transfer electricity efficiently between the province’s northern and southern regions.

The Ontario government’s plan to expand the province’s electricity transmission network includes a key upgrade to lines between Orangeville and Barrie.

The transmission investment arrives at a good time for Barrie, as the city approaches a provincial deadline to finalize a deal with Oro-Medonte and Springwater that could unlock up to 930 hectares of land. The new land would be addressing a shortage of residential and community/growth use in Barrie, in face of recent economic growth in the region.

The infrastructure announcement was unveiled by Energy and Mines Minister Stephen Lecce earlier this week, and he was in Barrie this morning with Mayor Alex Nuttall to taunt it once more.
