Ontario criticizes lack of consultation with the province on federal immigration rollback

Ontario Immigration Minister David Piccini said the federal government's new immigration policy that promises to reduce the number of newcomers to Canada in the coming years, "shattered" the national consensus on immigration and created new challenges for Ontario without previous consultation with the province.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller unveiled the 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan on Thursday, which will cut permanent residency targets by more than 100,000.

“This great country was built on a consensus around immigration, but the federal Liberals have shattered that consensus,” Piccini said. “They’ve created a problem, and now they’re attempting to fix it — without even consulting provinces like Ontario.”
