Ontario is urging the federal government to change the law so people can legally carry pepper spray for self-defence, arguing it would give vulnerable individuals a practical way to protect themselves.
In a letter sent Saturday to federal Justice Minister Sean Fraser, Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey asked Ottawa to amend the Criminal Code to permit the use of pepper spray against an attacker.
Downey wrote that allowing pepper spray for defensive purposes would provide “vulnerable, law-abiding citizens a practical, immediate tool to defend themselves.”
