Ontario's auditor general says that as the number of students with special education needs is growing faster than overall enrolment, some schools do not have enough educational assistants.
In a report released today on special education, auditor general Shelley Spence says school boards are spending more on special education than they are funded for by the Ministry of Education.
She says that while ministry funding for special education has increased by 15 per cent between 2019-20 and 2023-24, on pace with inflation, total school board special education spending increased by 19 per cent.
