Ontario and Toronto launch plans for third transmission line to power growing downtown core

Toronto’s electricity demand is expected to double by 2050, and with its current supply limited to just two transmission corridors, from Manby Transmission Station in the west and Leaside Transmission Station in the east, capacity will be maxed out by the early 2030s.

The Ontario government and the City of Toronto will be teaming up to build a third electricity transmission line into the downtown core.

Announced this Wednesday by Energy and Mines Minister Stephen Lecce and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, the project aims to support communities like the Port Lands and East Harbour, and help electrify major transit projects like the Ontario Line.
