New Democrats have chosen Fatima Shaban as their candidate in the upcoming Scarborough Southwest provincial byelection.
Shaban won the nomination Tuesday night, defeating two other contenders: Veronica Javier and Khalid Ahmed, at a local riding meeting.
She now becomes the NDP’s standard-bearer in a riding the party is trying to hold onto following the high-profile departure of former MPP and deputy leader Doly Begum, who resigned to run federally for the Liberals, and went on to decisively defeat Shaban in the April 13 byelection that saw Doly Begum elected for the Liberals.
