The Ontario Liberals emerged from one of their most contentious nomination battles in recent memory Saturday with a new candidate in Scarborough Southwest, and lingering questions about whether the fight is truly over.
Businessman and federal Liberal Party vice-chair Ahsanul Hafiz secured the nomination in the east-end Toronto riding after a bruising internal contest that drew unusual attention across political circles. But almost immediately after the result was announced, federal Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith suggested he may challenge the outcome.
Hafiz captured roughly 700 votes in the ranked-ballot contest, according to sources familiar with the result, while Erskine-Smith finished shortly with about 20 votes less per cent after approximately 1,400 ballots were cast.
