Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter says Ontario is running out of time to confront the drug toxicity crisis, and warns the province must be willing to take political risks to save lives.
In an interview, Carter said the Ford government should introduce legislation allowing what he calls “compassionate intervention,” a form of involuntary treatment for people whose addiction has progressed to the point where they can’t make decisions for themselves.
But he stressed that any law must be paired with an immediate, provincewide expansion of treatment capacity, including unused beds in Ontario’s private rehab sector.
