Ontario Liberal MPP John Fraser is pushing back against reports that caucus members pressured Bonnie Crombie to step down as party leader, calling the claims “unequivocally not true” and saying the decision was her own.
Fraser, who previously served as interim leader, was in the room during the caucus meeting on Sunday, just after Crombie received only 57 per cent support in a party confidence vote at the Ontario Liberals’ annual general meeting in Toronto.
“There was a meeting. We all got in the room. Bonnie sat down and said, ‘I want to hear what you have to say,’” Fraser said in an interview. “All the caucus were very supportive of our colleague. Nobody said to her, ‘you need to do this.’ Nobody said, ‘if you don’t do this, I’ll quit.’ That did not happen.”
