The Ford government has previously floated more aggressive reforms, including allowing judges to disqualify councillors and requiring members found in violation to cover investigation costs. Those measures never made it to the legislature.

Ontario is once again moving to overhaul how municipal politicians are policed, with Minister Rob Flack insisting long-delayed reforms will pass before voters head to the polls this fall.

Speaking at Queen’s Park, the municipal affairs and housing minister said the government is “confident” it can finally push through legislation to standardize codes of conduct and strengthen the role of integrity commissioners across the province, after multiple failed attempts stretching back years.

“It’s in process… we’re confident it’s going to be dealt with before the end of the session,” Flack said.
