When MPP Laura Smith stood up at Queen’s Park to introduce Bill 121, The Improve Dementia Care Act, she wasn’t just speaking as a legislator. She was speaking as a daughter and a niece, and as a caregiver herself.
Smith says the idea of coming up with a more structured legislation framework to help improve both the access and the quality of dementia care came from her own personal experience.
“I was the care provider for two members of my family who suffered from dementia simultaneously, while I was raising young children,” Smith said in an interview with QP Briefing. “To say I felt like I was drowning is an understatement.”
