Ford announced that Ontario will now move to issue its own work permits, a major departure from traditional immigration practices that fall under federal jurisdiction.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says the province will begin issuing its own work permits.

Ford mentioned ongoing frustrations with the federal government’s handling of immigration, particularly the long delays asylum seekers face before being allowed to work.

The premiers plan to invoke their authority under section 95 of the Constitution to begin issuing provincial work permits independently.
