Ford says Ontario is 'economic powerhouse' as government increases investments in EV plants

The Goodyear EV plant facility is only about 45 minutes west of Kingston, where the Belgium-based Umicore two years ago, in a partnership with both the federal and the provincial governments, announced a new EV plant that is now on hold due to “significant worsening of the EV market."

As Goodyear revealed a $575-million plan to update and expand its plant in Napanee, Premier Doug Ford says Ontario is still well-positioned to take advantage of the transition to electric vehicles despite weakness in the global market.

The premier said Ontario continues to attract billions in foreign investment and would be an economic powerhouse in North America if the province was a stand-alone country.

“I would never recommend that, prime minister, but if we were a stand-alone country, we would be the U.S.'s third largest trading partner in the world,” he said.
