Premier Doug Ford is signalling that he’s open to slashing the provincial portion of the HST on new homes if Ottawa steps up first.

The House of Commons on Thursday unanimously passed a ways and means motion that permits the governing Liberals to introduce legislation lowering income taxes and removing the federal GST on new builds valued at $1 million or less for first-time homebuyers.

But at a press conference on Friday, Ford said he has already raised the idea with Prime Minister Mark Carney on going further and removing the HST – in lockstep with the feds – for all homebuyers.
