Ford says Chinese EV deal will “destroy” Canada’s auto sector. Experts say the math doesn't back him up

Premier Doug Ford has warned that Ottawa’s decision to lower tariffs on a limited number of Chinese electric vehicles could devastate Canada’s auto industry.

But according to business experts, the data tells a very different story.

“There is no Canadian EV industry to destroy,” said Ian Lee, a business professor at Carleton University. “We don’t make inexpensive EVs in Canada. In fact, we don't even make expensive EVs in Canada. Most of the EVs available in Canada are coming in from the States.”
