NDP Leader Marit Stiles and OPSEU President JP Hornick on Thursday said more than 50 food service workers at the Ontario Science Centre have been laid off, despite the Ford government's promise of no immediate job losses from the facility's closure.

The food service workers, predominantly women and racialized individuals, Hornick said, received layoff notices just four days after the Ford government on Friday announced the Science Centre would close immediately due to issues with its roof.

The food services workers at the Science Centre were employed by an outside contractor, Levy Canada, who told the union that they were not given advance warning of the closure of the Science Centre either.
