Ford government eyes provincial control of rideshare rules: here is what it means

Under the current regime, municipalities regulate licensing, driver-screening, vehicle standards and local bylaws for transportation network companies. The patchwork of rules is cited by the province as a barrier to consistent service across regions.

Ontario is considering a province-wide framework to regulate rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft: a shift that could take power away from municipalities and standardize rules across the province.

The government’s 2025 Fall Economic Statement says it will “engage with rideshare operators, the taxi sector, and municipalities to explore the standardization of rideshare guidelines across the province.”

The goal: a unified system to improve access to rideshare services in rural and Northern areas, while supporting what they are calling “an integrated and efficient transportation network.”
