The Supreme Court has ruled Ontario Premier Doug Ford is not legally required to disclose his ministerial mandate letters to the public.
In an unanimous ruling, Canada’s highest court found the letters are exempted under the province’s freedom of information act under a section that allows all cabinet deliberations to remain confidential.
In 2018, a CBC journalist requested access to mandate letters given to cabinet ministers after Ford and his Progressive Conservatives first formed government. The provincial government refused to grant access, saying they were covered by cabinet confidentiality.
