Ford dismisses concerns as Umicore halts construction at Ontario EV battery plant

In Canada, only 11 per cent of new vehicles registered in 2023 were battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric or hydrogen fuel cell, which is far from the 20 per cent total by 2026 the country is aiming for.

Premier Ford said there is no reason to worry about the $2 billion EV plant investments across Ontario announced by the provincial and federal governments earlier this year, as Umicore stops the construction of its battery parts plant.

The company says construction stopped because the EV market in Canada seems to be stagnant.

"We're confident that more and more EV sales will happen. It has increased worldwide and it's going to continue to grow," Ford said.
