Ford demands 'tariff for tariff' response but says he’s ‘100%’ behind Carney

Ford didn't call for any immediate new retaliatory tariffs and repeatedly emphasized his confidence in Carney’s leadership, even as the prime minister said he was open to removing existing tariffs to help Canadian industries weather the trade storm.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is sending mixed signals on his preferred path ahead in the trade war against the U.S.

He told reporters on Wednesday that he wanted to see aggressive retaliation against the United States in response to increase tariffs. But at the same press conference, Ford said he's “100 per cent supportive” of Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has signalled a far more restrained approach.

“You can’t have tariffs on one side and not the other,” Ford said after an unrelated announcement in Thornhill. “I still stand by what I say: ‘dollar for dollar, tariff for tariff.’ They understand strength, not weakness, and we should never, ever roll over and be weak.”
