Ford defends closures of safe-consumption sites in Ontario

Critics argue that safe consumption sites save lives by preventing overdose deaths, reducing calls to paramedics and ambulances, and prevent more people from crowding already packed hospitals, avoiding an additional burden to the health care system that is already overwhelmed in the province.

Premier Doug Ford on Monday stood by his government's decision to close safe consumption sites within 200 meters of a school or daycare centre.

In an unrelated press conference, Ford said that he “doesn’t believe” in the facilities, which he called a “failed policy.”

“Imagine going into a place at any given time to get the drugs you want. And some sell those drugs and then they buy higher harder drugs. It's a fact, these are not made up stories,” he said.
