Ford calls for feds to take action to keep violent thieves behind bars

"I always say the police can't do their jobs unless we give them the proper tools to do their jobs and the courts back them up and support our police on the front lines," Ford told reporters.

The federal government needs to tighten bail rules and impose harsher sentences to keep violent thieves in jail, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Monday.

Speaking at a public safety announcement in Mississauga, Ford said he personally told Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Ottawa needs to step up with stiffer penalties to stop the increasing number of violent auto thefts in the province.

"Message to the prime minister: You need to start coming up with mandatory sentencing. You go in, you kick the door in, you put a gun to someone's head, you steal their car, you need to be going to jail for 10 years, five years, whatever they determine," he said.
