The federal government is removing the GST on the construction of rental housing in Canada, according to a senior government source.

The Globe and Mail first reported the announcement — set to be made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this afternoon at the final day of the Liberal caucus retreat in London, Ont.

The government source said the idea is to lower costs that would otherwise act as barriers to new rental construction.
