Canada is revamping how it selects skilled immigrants, expanding fast-track permanent residency for researchers, senior executives and even military recruits, even as Ottawa rejects Ontario’s push for greater control over who gets to stay.
At a speech in Toronto this Wednesday, Immigration Minister Lena Diab announced new Express Entry categories designed to target workers the federal government says are critical to economic growth, supply chain and national defence.
“Our Express Entry system is at the core of our approach for attracting and retaining the skilled workers Canada needs,” Diab told the Canadian Club of Toronto. “We’re not waiting for the right people to find us. We will go out into the world to recruit the people our country needs.”
