When Premier Doug Ford steps to a podium and demands tougher federal bail laws, he’s speaking to real public concerns. Gun violence, property crime, and fears of repeat offenders are top of mind for Ontarians, as many polls showed during the provincial election.

But there’s one problem: the bail system isn’t under Ford’s direct control: it’s largely a federal responsibility.
