Canada introduces stronger tariffs on Chinese EVs, steel and aluminum

The federal government is strengthening tariffs on electric-vehicles (EVs) imported from China, following similar moves by the U.S. and European Union earlier this year.

A new 100 per cent surtax will take effect on Oct. 1 for all Chinese-made EVs, a significant increase from the six per cent tariff currently enforced.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the change was necessary to address “unfair practices” used by the Chinese government to subsidize its EV industry, resulting in the mass production and exportation of Chinese cars across the globe, undercutting domestic manufacturers.
