Calandra to appoint supervisor to oversee troubled Near North school board, and run it himself in the mean time

Calandra said the advisor will monitor the board’s governance, decision-making, and compliance with ministry directives after the report concluded that poor governance, and not construction issues as previously said, was the main cause of the school’s repeated delays.

Education Minister Paul Calandra says he will appoint a provincial supervisor to the Near North District School Board, but until that happens, he is personally taking over the troubled board, an unprecedented move he says is needed to get answers.

The minister said he needs to find out “what the heck is going on" before anything else.

Calandra announced Monday that the province is assuming control of the North Bay–based board, immediately stripping trustees of their power. It is the first time Calandra has flexed the expanded takeover powers granted to him under Bill 33, which passed just a week and a half ago.
