Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra has placed the Peel District School Board under immediate provincial supervision and issued a two-week ultimatum to the York Catholic District School Board to demonstrate why it should not face a similar takeover.
Calandra used new legislative powers passed just before Christmas (bill 33) that allow the province to intervene more quickly in struggling boards.
In an interview with QP Briefing, Calandra said the move at Peel was prompted by what he described as an urgent situation involving planned teacher layoffs and classroom reorganization.
