Calandra eyes legislation to revamp the role of trustees amid spending scandal

While no timeline has been announced for potential governance reforms, insiders say the ministry is preparing a package of proposed legislation still for this year that could redefine the responsibilities, or even the necessity, of elected trustees altogether.

Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Chair Markus de Domenico expensed a slew of questionable purchases to taxpayers, from high-end Apple products to milkshakes and McDonald’s at 3 a.m.,  as the Ford government escalates its campaign to rein in school board trustees and overhaul how education is governed in Ontario.

Receipts obtained by QP Briefing show that Markus de Domenico expensed more than $1,500 on high-end Apple products, including a pair of AirPods Pro ($371.77), an 11-inch iPad Air ($729), AppleCare+ ($89), an Apple Pencil Pro ($179.67), and a $249 leather MacBook sleeve, all charged to school board accounts in recent years.

The purchases were made between 2021 and 2024 and in some cases shipped to de Domenico’s home address, using his TCDSB email and contact information.
