Policy Wars – Brainstorming Budgets, Pushing Platforms

Three top policymakers who worked under Liberal and Progressive Conservative governments at Queen’s Park come to Ryerson to debate how politicians develop and demolish ideas — for better or for worse. With a PC leadership convention days away, a Liberal government budget weeks away, and a spring election just three months off, Ontario politics has never been so disrupted, quite so rapidly. How do politicians build their budgets, write their platforms, and then rewrite them in record time? How do public servants keep it straight, and how can voters read between the lines?

Moderated by Toronto Star political columnist Martin Regg Cohn, a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Arts, the panel includes:

- Shelly Jamieson, former cabinet secretary and head of Ontario’s public service;
- David Lindsay, ex-deputy minister, former chief of staff and principal secretary to the premier, now CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities;
- Jamison Steeve, former principal secretary to the premier, now executive director of the Martin Prosperity Institute.

Sponsored by the Centre for Policy Innovation and Public Engagement (CPIPE). Admission is free, no tickets required.
