Queen's Park was host to Alberta Premier Rachel Notley on Thursday, as she met with Premier Kathleen Wynne to talk carbon pricing, pipelines, the Trans-Pacific Partnership and an inquiry for missing and murdered indigenous women.

The two premiers presented a united front of supporting carbon pricing policies that would achieve real emissions reductions. But they also stressed the need to support the energy industry in a way that doesn't involve "pitting one province against the other," in the words of Wynne.

"What's important from our perspective is we're all taking action, and that's consistent with the Canadian Energy Strategy," she said.

As they both prepare for the upcoming UN climate change conference in Paris, Wynne acknowledged the two provinces have different contexts and thus different solutions for how to get emissions down.

While Ontario is preparing to implement cap-and-trade, the Alberta government is waiting for an expert panel to make recommendations on climate change policy. (Currently, Alberta has a small quasi-carbon tax that applies to some industries on a "carbon intensity" basis.)

Notley said she's aiming to have a firmer climate change policy in place by the December UN conference.

"We look forward to having a framework of a plan so we can take that with us to Paris and put forward, as Premier Wynne has said, a presentation from the country that shows we are all working on taking this issue seriously," Notley said.

Much of the news conference was focused on energy policy, specifically the Energy East pipeline proposal that's pending review by the National Energy Board.

Notley said she hopes that as Alberta brings in tougher environmental policies, it will "allow us to reframe the discussion" around supporting the energy industry in the rest of the country.

Asked whether it was fair for the Ontario government to impose conditions on support for Energy East, Notley demurred.

"I think that a pipeline is good economics for Alberta and good economics for Canada," she said. "If I can do my job, which is in part ensuring that the reputation and the social licence in the industry is improved ... then I can do everything I can to have discussions, as many as possible, to promote what ultimately I think is in the best economic interest of all Canadians."

Wynne said it's important to keep reminding everyone of how many Ontario businesses are connected to the Alberta economy, and wants to find ways to deepen the relationships.

"We talked about the possibility of me coming to Alberta, bringing some businesses from Ontario and making some of those connections, particularly in the tech industry."

Both Wynne and Notley said they are still concerned about "the crying need for a national inquiry on missing and murdered aboriginal women and girls."

"This is something that premiers across the country have agreed is necessary, and have joined with aboriginal people to call for a national inquiry," Wynne said.
