Each year, MPPs have to disclose their personal financial assets, liabilities and other information to the Office of the Integrity Commissioner. The commissioner, J. David Wake, then meets with each MPP individually to review their disclosure, remind them of their ethical obligations and discuss potential conflicts of interest. The data just released yesterday covers up to Sept. 1, 2021.
Wake then discloses some of that information, relating to MPPs and their families, to the public. It includes:

<li>Where they draw salary from</li>
<li>Assets, including investments, shares and private companies</li>
<li>Liabilities, including mortgages and lines of credit</li>
<li>Gifts and personal benefits</li>
<li>Offices and directorships</li>
</ul>
The data doesn't include dollar figures. So the public can see that Progressive Conservative MPP Aris Babikian has a mortgage with BMO — but not how much is left to pay.

<h3>Rental income</h3>
A total of 25 MPPs are landlords: 13 PCs, nine New Democrats, two Liberals and one independent member declared rental income and/or investment properties:

PC MPP Rudy Cuzzetto's spouse declares rental income, but he doesn't.
The landlord with the most investment properties is PC MPP Cho, with four in Toronto.
As the associate minister of transportation, Cho has been involved with the government's plan to build more affordable housing around transit stations. But Cho also asked Housing Minister Steve Clark <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-mzo-willowdale-modular-housing-1.6339477" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to hold off</a> on pushing through a modular affordable housing project in his riding last year, and said the location was "not suitable" and that the federal government hadn't consulted enough with locals.
<h3>Private companies</h3>
There are 18 MPPs involved with private companies, including 11 PCs, five NDP members and two independents. Many more also have spouses with businesses.

Many MPPs across party lines are invested in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and other real estate-based funds, which benefit from Canada's <a href="https://ipolitics.ca/2021/08/30/should-housing-prices-fall-the-parties-are-dodging-the-question/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">high housing prices</a>.
Energy is another very popular investment sector for MPPs, with many having bought into specific companies or wider funds. Seven MPPs hold shares in energy company Enbridge. The company has garnered headlines recently as Michigan's governor has sought to shut down its Line 5 pipeline between the state and Ontario. The Ford government, along with Ottawa, has been a vocal opponent of that proposal.
Mining is another popular sector for government officials to buy shares in. The Ford government has vowed to open up the Ring of Fire and drastically increase mining activity in Ontario's north.
Some MPPs have stakes in COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers. PC MPPs Jeff Yurek and Lorne Coe have shares in Pfizer. And independent Belinda Karahalios, who is still temporarily banned from the legislature after she caught COVID-19 while unvaccinated, is invested in vaccine maker and seller Novavax.
Yurek and Coe also have shares in Molson-Coors, which is a co-owner of The Beer Store. The government is currently in <a href="https://www.thestar.com/business/2021/11/26/deal-may-be-brewing-between-the-beer-store-and-the-province.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">negotiations</a> with the retailer over the future of beer sales in the province.
As PressProgress <a href="https://pressprogress.ca/ontarios-assistant-infrastructure-minister-defended-doug-fords-handling-of-long-term-care-homes-he-also-held-shares-in-long-term-care-companies/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> last year, PC MPP Stephen Crawford is invested in for-profit long-term care companies Sienna Senior Living and Chartwell Retirement Residences, which have faced significant controversy during the pandemic as thousands of seniors perished in the long-term care homes.
Shoutout to PC MPP Vijay Thanigasalam for being the lone crypto investor among MPPs.
And PC MPP Goldie Ghamari appears to have gotten in on the GameStop meme investing trend. Amateur investors bought the bottom-barrel stock as a meme last year, surging its price and shocking Wall Street.
"These hands are made of diamond," she told QP Briefing when asked if she had sold her stock for a profit.
"Diamond hands" is web-investor slang for someone who's content to hold onto their investment for a long time.
