Rookie Attorney General Yasir Naqvi's top priority will be to develop the government's weed strategy, according to Premier Kathleen Wynne's instruction.
More precisely, Naqvi will "lead the development of a regulatory framework that focuses on the promotion of public health and safety, including road safety, the protection of young people and high-risk users and harm reduction," reads the minister's <a href="https://www.ontario.ca/page/september-2016-mandate-letter-attorney-general" target="_blank">mandate letter</a> delivered Friday.
Ontario's chief law officer will develop the strategy with the ministries of Health, Finance, Transportation, Children and Youth Services and Community Safety to come up with a model for selling and regulating recreational pot, as Ottawa is set to table its legal weed legislation next spring. Ontario's First Nations will also have a seat at the table, the letter adds.
Developing a provincial framework for soon-to-be legalized recreational marijuana was the first priority listed in the letter, which includes creating a fair and accessible justice system, reforming the province's beleaguered bail and remand system and modernizing the criminal justice system through "digital innovation."
The attorney general is also heading up the review of police oversight bodies in tandem with his former ministry, Community Safety and Correctional Services, and will work to reduce gun crime. He is also continuing with potential reforms to the Ontario Municipal Board.
