Nathalie Des Rosiers likely learned about the concept of innocent until proven guilty in law school — if not as a student, then perhaps as a dean — but the Liberal MPP found she needed to apologize Thursday morning for tweets sent from her account that didn't reflect that principle.

Des Rosiers apologized for tweets sent Wednesday evening, in both official languages, that said an Ottawa police officer had "murdered" Abdirahman Abdi, an Ottawa man who died last year.

Const. Daniel Montsion is charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault, and assault with a weapon in his death — but not murder — and the case has not yet gone to trial.

"My thoughts are with Abdi's family & friends murdered by a careless police officer. Be strong!" her account tweeted, later adding a comment about due process.

The tweets were deleted Thursday morning.

Des Rosiers issued an apology, and later told the CBC the tweets were made without her knowledge.

“Despite the tweets from my account last night, I want to make it clear I had no intention of commenting on any ongoing proceedings," she said. "I have absolute respect for the integrity of our judicial process. In our society everyone is innocent until proven guilty and I apologize that the comments last night did not reflect that principle.”

Des Rosiers is a former dean of the University of Ottawa law school and a former General Counsel to the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.

The tweet was criticized my many, including Ottawa's chief of police, Charles Bordeleau, who tweeted, "Mr. Abdi's death has been difficult for many. We should all respect due process and allow the Court to (fulfill its) role."
