Ontario has become the first province to allow driver's licences to be renewed online.

Every five years, drivers are required to renew their licence, update their photo and pay an $80 fee (for a standard licence). Now, the government will allow eligible licensees to renew online every other year and keep the same photo for up to a decade. Unpaid parking tickets and other issues could require someone to go into a ServiceOntario centre instead.

"Today is very much about making life a little more convenient for Ontarians," Government Services Minister John Milloy said at the announcement.

The government has allowed online renewals for licence plate stickers for some time, so the website will allow people to bundle those renewals and do it all at once. The site accepts both Interac online and credit card and will allow drivers to print a temporary licence for use with their old card while they await a new one.

The only problem is that green photo health cards still can't be renewed online, so almost everyone will still have to visit a ServiceOntario centre every five years to renew that identification.

Milloy also said the government is not looking to revive the shuttered self-service kiosks, which closed last year following a security breach. Instead, the ministry is focusing on expanding its ever-growing list of online services. There are already about 40 services, from addresses changes to birth certificates, that can be completed online.
