Job Summary:

Public & Corporate Affairs is looking for someone to provide advocacy, research and writing support to the VP, Public & Corporate Affairs as part of the advocacy process on a broad range of regulatory issues that impact Sun Life Financial (SLF) provincially and federally.

Key accountabilities:

Work directly with the VP, Public & Corporate Affairs, the Public & Corporate (P&CA) team and other senior SLF representatives as necessary to understand and assess the impact of potential public policy direction, legislation and regulation on the Corporate office and SLF’s Canadian business operations.
Conduct research that will assist in the development of the company’s public policy positions (including policy areas such as health care, financial advice and insurance protection, etc.) and public affairs’ strategies as they pertain to SLF’s Canadian operations.
Draft key messages and background briefs that will be used by the VP, Public & Corporate Affairs and senior SLF representatives for advocacy purposes with provincial / federal government representatives and the public.
Make recommendations on industry sponsorships and assist in the management of select industry/stakeholder relations, including meeting with industry associations and government representatives at various roundtable discussions and events.
As necessary, assist the VP Public & Corporate Affairs on SLF Canada projects as they pertain to key SLF Canada business units, including Group Benefits and Individual Insurance and Investments.

Required Competencies:

Strong research and analytical skills.
Excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
Ability to learn complex issues quickly and to simplify them for public consumption.
Knowledge of Federal or national public policy issues related to wealth management, savings, health care and financial sector policy.
Knowledge of the workings of federal and provincial governments and the public policy process.
Demonstrated knowledge of / or experience with the broader Canadian financial sector.
Undergrad in political science.
Master degree in public policy/administration.
Min. 5 yrs. experience in a government affairs role with a Canadian financial services firm or business association.
Successful completion of the Canadian Securities Course.
