With the federal election campaign in full swing, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has announced a familiar-looking plan to nearly double Canada’s infrastructure investments over the next decade.

The vow – a 10-year, $125-billion promise – looks strikingly similar to the 10-year, $130-billion infrastructure pledge Premier Kathleen Wynne and the Ontario Liberals campaigned on more than a year ago, with the result a majority provincial government.

The federal Liberals are calling their plan for new transit, highways, bridges and other building the “largest new investment in infrastructure in Canadian history.” The Ontario Liberal government, in numerous press releases, says it is “making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history.”

Trudeau’s plan was unveiled Thursday morning in Oakville, in front of a backdrop of members of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

The federal Grits are proposing to focus on three areas of spending: public transit, social infrastructure and green infrastructure. Those three sectors, the Liberals vow, would receive almost $20 billion more in investment each over the next 10 years.

All told, Trudeau and company’s pitch is to approximately double the federal infrastructure budget to nearly $125 billion (from almost $65 billion proposed by the Conservatives) in the next decade. That’s if, of course, the Liberals come out victorious in the Oct. 19 election.

Trudeau’s infrastructure pitch also falls in line with what the Ontario Liberals are saying at Queen’s Park. Furthermore, the similarities don't end with platforms: Liberal staffers have slowly begun migrating to the Trudeau campaign.

“Our message, nationally, is the best thing the federal government could do today is to enhance their investments in infrastructure,” Cabinet minister Brad Duguid said on Tuesday.

Trudeau, likewise, maintains that investment in infrastructure will be the solution to Canada’s current economic issues, with turbulent stock markets and lagging commodity prices slowing growth.

Trudeau also stressed the importance of sustainable growth as a way to mitigate the current economic climate, declaring that “an investment in projects and in the people who can build them” will once again make Canada prosperous.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities quickly praised the Liberal proposal, saying that every dollar spent on infrastructure returns “at least” $1.20 to the economy.

“These are smart investments. And investments of the scale proposed today will create jobs, strengthen the economy and make our communities more resilient,” FCM president Raymond Louie said in a statement. “The details of the funding mechanisms and sources are critical. We are encouraged to hear a commitment to work with municipalities moving forward."

Trudeau has said his government would run a deficit for three straight years while splurging on infrastructure.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, meanwhile, say their budgets would be balanced.
